PENNINGTON GAP, Va. (AP) -- Wellmont Health System is closing Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap.
The 70-bed hospital employs about 140 workers. It's scheduled to close Oct. 1.
Wellmont says the decision is due in part to Medicare reimbursement cuts related to the Affordable Care Act and a lack of Medicaid expansion in Virginia. Other factors include a lack of physician coverage and a decline in the community's use of the hospital.
Media outlets report that Wellmont announced the closure Wednesday.
Sen. Bill Carrico and Del. Terry Kilgore say in statements that they're disappointed by Wellmont's decision. They say they will look for other health care options for the community.
