Race into fall: Summer winds down, local races gear up

WASHINGTON – If you’re looking for ways to get out and challenge your body as summer winds down, there are a handful of local races that will get your blood pumping — some even take place this weekend.

Comus Run Cross Country

Aug. 17 in Comus, Md.

This 5K race takes runners through a scenic route of trails and grass, so be sure to pack your cross country spikes. The race begins at 5:30 p.m., and the run only accepts race-day registration.

Feed Annapolis 5 Mile Run and 2 Mile Fun Run/Walk

Aug 17 in Annapolis, Md.

After the 8 a.m. race, spend 15 minutes hand-packing a box of meals that go to local Annapolis schools. Registration is $40 and is available online.

Blue Crab Bolt 10K Trail Running Series

Saturdays through Aug. 17 in Clarksburg, Md.

The Blue Crab 10K consists of three different trail runs throughout Montgomery County, Md. Runners will have the opportunity to race on the Seneca Creek Course, the Schaeffer Farms Course and the Little Bennett Course. Race fees are $40 and registration is available online.

Leesburg 20K/5K

Aug. 18 in Leesburg, Va.

Feeling up for a big challenge? If a 5K is a piece of cake for you, try Leesburg’s 20K. It runs on the same day as the shorter race. Registration for both are available online.

The Luray Sprint Triathlon

Aug 18. in Luray, Va.

Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this course features a lake swim and rolling hills for the 17 mile bike ride and 5K run. The course map and registration are available online.

The Runn’Mate 5K Series

Aug. 23-24 in Alexandria, Va.

An exercise and social experience, this event starts with a 5K run and ends with an after-party cool down. Included in your race entry is exclusive admission to a unique post-race celebration that takes place at a different bar, club or other venue.

The Eastern County 8K and Fun Run

Aug. 24 in Silver Spring, Md.

The Montgomery County Road Runners Club will host a “school spirit” 8K run — so come decked-out in your favorite school’s apparel. Registration is race-day, only, and the race begins at 7:30 a.m. in Martin Luther King Park, Silver Spring, Md.

South Lakes 10K

Aug. 25 in Reston, Va.

Looking for a good fall season kick-off? This race boasts a new course with some flat stretches, as well as good climbs.

Ongoing Fitness Programs

If your goal is to get in shape for an upcoming race, the Montgomery County Road Runners Club is still accepting registrations for its 5K Walking Program.

The almost three-month program meets twice a week and runs through early November with the goal of finishing the Rockville 5K on Nov. 3.
