ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- An Anne Arundel County jury has awarded a woman $800,000 because her landlord allegedly failed to do anything about a bedbug infestation in her apartment.
The jury made the award in compensatory and punitive damages to 66-year-old Faika Shaaban on Wednesday. She rented an apartment in a house owned by Cornelius J. Barrett.
Shaaban's lawyer, Daniel Whitney, tells The Capital of Annapolis (http://bit.ly/115KuQe ) that the woman moved into the apartment in Annapolis in October 2011 and soon broke out into a rash. He says a doctor diagnosed the rash as bedbug bites.
Whitney says Shaaban reported the infestation to the city, and Barrett was ordered, but failed to hire an exterminator to correct the problem.
The Capital says Barrett did not answer calls to his home.
