CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- The University of Virginia is opening a center focused on the assessment and treatment of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The university says that rather than approach the disorder as a problem to be fixed, the Children's Learning Clinic will focus on unlocking the potential of children with ADHD.

The Curry School of Education will operate the clinic, which will be open to the public for children ages 8 to 12 who have been diagnosed with ADHD or have been experiencing symptoms associated with the disorder. Clinic director Michael Kofler says educators there believe these children can go from struggling to thriving.

Kofler has designed an extensive assessment process. Two weeks after testing, parents receive a report. Children who qualify will be eligible for a 10-week, non-medication treatment.
