ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The state of Maryland is reporting a 2.4 percent increase in gambling revenue for the state’s general fund and education trust fund for the last fiscal year.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency reported Monday that the state’s traditional lottery and casinos generated $849.2 million for the two state funds.

Traditional lottery sales dropped 1.7 percent to $1.7 billion in fiscal year 2014, which ended June 30, compared to the previous fiscal year.

Stephen Martin, the lottery director, says the drop in traditional lottery sales is attributable to the growth of Maryland’s casino industry. However, he says state proceeds from casinos produced an overall increase in gambling revenue for the state.

Maryland currently has four open casinos. A fifth casino is scheduled to open this month in Baltimore.
