Insurgents target small convoy near residential compound used by foreigners in Afghan capital

Friday - 10/18/2013, 12:30pm  ET

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- Afghan officials say a suicide car bomber attacked a small convoy of vehicles today near a heavily fortified private residential compound used by hundreds of foreigners on the outskirts of Kabul, killing two passers-by.

The Interior Ministry says the vehicles attacked were used "by foreigners," but there were no reports that the people in the vehicles were injured.

Police initially reported that the Green Village compound was the target of the attack.

A Taliban spokesman has claimed responsibility for the car bombing and said the residential compound was the intended target.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force confirms there was a car bomb attack in Kabul and says "one enemy killed."

Small arms fire could be heard after the initial blast, apparently from guards in the area.
