Thursday - 8/1/2013, 1:40pm  ET

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota and Nissan are all reporting double-digit U.S. sales gains in July.

Pickup trucks were the top sellers, but people also bought a lot of SUVs and smaller cars.

Toyota led the way with nearly a 16.5 percent increase over last July, followed closely by General Motors at 16 percent. Chrysler, Nissan and Ford all reported 11 percent gains. It was Chrysler's best July since 2006 and Nissan's best July ever.

Of the automakers reporting this morning, only Volkswagen had a down month. Its sales were off 3.3 percent as sales of the top-selling Jetta compact fell 1.8 percent.

GM says it sold just over 234,000 vehicles. Combined sales of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups rose 46 percent and accounted for 42 percent of GM's sales.

Ford sold nearly 194,000 vehicles, led by the F-Series pickup, which saw a sales increase of 23 percent. Sales of the Fiesta subcompact rose 89 percent.

At Chrysler, sales of the Ram pickup rose 31 percent and Jeep Grand Cherokee sales rose 30 percent, the SUV's best July since 2005.

Toyota releases numbers for individual brands later today.
