U.K. Defense Firms Win 3 Pentagon Contracts

Thursday - 7/25/2013, 2:28pm  ET

The Department of Defense awarded eight contracts on Wednesday worth just under $956 million in combined value. Three of them went to subsidiaries of non-U.S. firms, specifically:

  • QinetiQ North America, which was awarded a $20.4 million firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for to provide post-production support for MK 2 man-transportable robotic systems (MTRS) to be used in bomb disposal work. The MTRS MK2 -- also known as the "Talon" robot -- is a rival to the U.S. company iRobot's PackBot bomb disposal robot. QinetiQ won a similar contract for Talon IV robots earlier this month.
  • BAE Systems (NASDAQOTH: BAESY) Hawaii won a $16 million contract modification expanding the scope of repairs to be conducted on the Navy guided missile destroyer USS Chafee (DDG 90). BAE will be working on this contract through February 2014.
  • Finally, a second BAE subsidiary, this time San Diego Ship Repair, won a $7.5 million contract modification to perform upgrades on the landing ship dock USS Rushmore (LSD 47). This work should be complete by November 2013.
