Mexico rights body probes teens run over by gunmen

Thursday - 12/19/2013, 6:30pm  ET

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexico's human rights agency is investigating the case of five teenage students killed as they left their school Christmas party when gunmen in a speeding pickup ran over them.

The National human Rights Commission sent workers to the border city of Reynosa to investigate what was initially described by Tamaulipas state authorities as a military chase that ended with the truck skidding and hitting the students. Their ages ranged from 13 to 15.

Mexico's army said Thursday its soldiers were not chasing any criminals and went to the scene to offer medical assistance to a woman and child also injured by the truck.

State officials say it's not clear if anyone was chasing the truck. They say there's no evidence the gunmen were fleeing from soldiers. The gunmen escaped.
