Brazil task force to deal help Haitian immigrants

Thursday - 4/11/2013, 3:00pm  ET

SAO PAULO (AP) -- The government has set up a task force to deal with the influx of Haitian immigrants into Brazil's northern state of Acre.

The Justice Ministry says representatives of five ministries and the federal police comprise the task force that will "regularize the situation of Haitian immigrants who have entered Brazil illegally."

Thursday's announcement follows a declaration of "social emergency" in Acre state due to the costs of helping the increasing numbers of Haitians entering the state.

It said that more than 4,000 Haitians have entered Acre since the 2010 earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince. State Justice and Human Rights Secretary Nilson Mourao says that 1,100 immigrants entered the state just in the past few days.
