COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - Danish police killed an alleged drug smuggler and wounded another in the country's far north as it tried to intercept a large shipment of marijuana aboard a boat, the force said Monday.
A police officer was also wounded in the shootout late Sunday, which happened as police attempted to search the boat in the small harbor of Aalbaek. A search of the vessels uncovered some 250 kilograms (550 pounds) of marijuana on the boat, police said.
Two suspects, including the wounded man, were apprehended, police said.
Kirsten Dyrman, a spokeswoman for the North Denmark Region police, said the three suspects were from Norway. She said the oldest smuggler, who was born in 1963, died in the shootout after taking two shots to the head and two more to the chest area.
Such shootouts are extremely rare in Denmark. Police officials said a special bureau will take over the investigation to determine whether police were justified in using their firearms.
