Ivory Coast ex-president's headquarters attacked

Saturday - 8/18/2012, 12:53pm  ET

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) - Officials from the former president's party say more than 20 assailants attacked their headquarters, injuring a few party members with machetes and taking documents, computer equipment and personal belongings.

Witnesses said a minibus full of men pulled up to the headquarters on Saturday. The building itself sustained minor damage, and a car had been set ablaze on the road outside. They said three party members sustained machete wounds.

Party spokesman Augustin Guehoun said the attackers were wearing military uniforms and that party leaders suspected the army was behind the attack. But witnesses said the attackers were wearing civilian clothing. Military officials said they are investigating.

Ivory Coast has seen six attacks on military installations so far this month, and government officials have blamed loyalists of former President Laurent Gbagbo for the violence.
