ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The St. Petersburg Fire Department has honored a Virginia man for making two lifesaving rescues in two days.

A ceremony with the mayor and fire officials was held Thursday to honor Gus Hertz, who received the keys to the city with his parents, his wife and four children standing at his side.

Hertz and another man, Kevin Daly, helped rescue a man who drove his car off of the road and into the waters of Tampa Bay on June 13.

The next day, Hertz rescued two people who had been flying in an ultralight aircraft and had crashed into the Tampa Bay waters by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

During the ceremony, Hertz downplayed his actions.

"I've gotten way more attention than I ever wanted for this," said the married father of four.

The pilot of the ultralight, and his passenger, attended the event and expressed thanks.

"That's all I could think about, gratitude," said Gina Zimmerlund, the passenger in the ultralight. Who described a harrowing feeling of being trapped and unable to move while underwater after crashing. "It's just a miracle that someone was there that quick."
