Man poses as police officer to rob Va. home

WASHINGTON – Police are looking for an armed man they say impersonated a police officer with the intent to rob a home in Stafford County, Va.

Tuesday night, the uniformed man knocked on the door of a Riggs Road home in the Leland Station subdivision and said he had to deliver some news. He asking to come into their home, says Bill Kennedy with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

He escorted the couple who lived in the home into a room at gunpoint and told them to stay put while he scoured their home. The two escaped and called 911 from a neighbor’s home.

The man is described as white, between 5-foot-10 and 6-feet and has short dark hair. He weighs between 250 and 285 pounds and is between 35 and 45 years old.

Police aren’t identifying what type of uniform the man was wearing but offer residents these tips to identify a genuine police officer from a fake:

  1. Look for an agency name on the badge. Often fake badges will just say “Police” or “Investigator.”
  2. Ask them for identification.
  3. Call 911 to ask if the dispatcher has a record of anyone responding to your home.

Police are asking residents who saw someone matching the impersonator’s description in that area Tuesday to call Stafford Crime Solvers at 540-659-2020 or text STAFFORD and your tip to CRIMES (274637).
