Va. man using beard brouhaha to benefit kids

Wednesday - 8/7/2013, 2:44pm  ET

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- A Fredericksburg man who took to Facebook in an effort to keep his beard is now using it for good.

Taylor Gehring grew out a beard last year. Not a fan of the whiskers, his wife told him he could keep the facial hair if he got 10,000 likes on Facebook.

He succeeded, pulling in over 15,000 supporters.

The Free Lance-Star reports (http://bit.ly/1c7d0MM) his story caught the eye of a television crew, which is filming Gehring for a possible reality show.

Gehring is using the experience to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network and the Rappahannock Area YMCA. He'll host a beard and mustache competition Saturday at the Spotsylvania Towne Center.

Sponsors also will try to set a Guinness World Record by getting 1,700 people to wear fake mustaches.
