FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - A Civil War general's prized sword has returned to Fredericksburg.
Union Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside's sword is on display at the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center until late January.
The National Park Service says Burnside likely carried the sword at the Battle of Fredericksburg in mid-December 1862.
A collector who owns the sword is loaning it to the park for the battle sesquicentennial.
The sword's hilt still has its original metallic-threaded knot. Park service historian Frank O'Reilly tells the Free Lance-Star ( http://bit.ly/SbTShy) that such knots are rare. It indicates that the sword was well taken care of and was Burnside's favorite.
