WASHINGTON -- It's happening throughout the region: Stealing copper piping from homes under construction or being renovated.
In Prince William County, almost 30 homes have been victims of copper theft since June.
In some cases, water pipes have been stolen with water still in the pipes.
Experts warn that if the pipes are part of a gas line or if the theft isn't noticed, gas can build up and be a threat for explosion the next time a light switch is flipped.
If you notice piping has been stolen, call the fire department at 703-670-3700. They can ventilate and test the home to make sure it's safe.
