WASHINGTON - Hurricane Irene has claimed the life of a Manassas Park teen who was killed Saturday in North Carolina.
Katherine "Momo" Morales, 15, died when the SUV she was riding in collided with another SUV at an intersection in Goldsboro, N.C. that had lost power due to the storm.
The accident happened around 4:15 p.m., hours after the storms effects began lashing eastern North Carolina. Goldsboro police say Cruz was one of four family members thrown from the vehicle. The family was returning to northern Virginia from Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Friends of the incoming sophomore at Manassas Park High School have created a Facebook page and are organizing a candlelight memorial service for Morales this Saturday at the high school.
Manassas Park Superintendent Bruce McDade said the vigil will be held at 8 p.m. at the stadium where Morales played soccer for the school.
The high school is small, with only about 760 students, and McDade said the entire community has been affected.
