VRE Manassas trains to be impacted after train hits, kills pedestrian

WASHINGTON – After a Virginia Railway Express train struck and killed a person near Burke, Va. Wednesday morning, rail service will be adjusted for the afternoon/evening trains to Manassas.

VRE officials say the Manassas 331, which normally leaves Union Station at 5:05 p.m. will only have six cars instead of the normal eight, which officials predict could cause crowding Wednesday evening.

For those riders who use the Manassas 331 as their regular train, VRE officials recommend taking another train, including:

  • Manassas 329 (Departs Union Station at 4:25 p.m.) – will have eight cars
  • Manassas 333 (Departs Union Station at 5:30 p.m.) – will have seven cars

Fairfax County police have identified this morning’s victim as Manassas resident Danyelle Lynn Anderson, 22. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police investigation indicates the train was traveling southbound around 7 a.m. from Washington, D.C. to Manassas when it rounded a slight curve.

It was foggy and dark and visibility was reduced, police say.

The train’s engineer saw a pedestrian walking across the tracks and immediately applied the emergency brake and sounded the horn.

The train slowed but hit the pedestrian.

VRE canceled Trains 330 and 332 Wednesday.
