Food- and beverage-based retail continues to grow in Merrifield's Mosaic District as wine shop Swirl & Sip opened last week.
The 1,500-square-foot store carries more than 600 bottles and more than 100 craft beers in addition to cheeses, charcuterie and other gourmet accompaniments. The retailer has previously only operated online.
During the first few days, the shop focused on six different bottle tastings that would pour well with Thanksgiving dinner, said Jason Kim, who owns the store with his wife, Janice.
Swirl & Sip's wine selection focuses on the New World wines, especially those from California, but represents most of the major wine-making regions of the world, Kim said.
"We really look for low-production, very high-quality winemakers," Kim said.
Within a few weeks, the shop hopes to have its online ordering up and running, which will include delivery throughout the D.C. region.
The shop has also partnered with several other Mosaic retailers, including Capital Teas, Ah Love Oil & Vinegar and Artisan Confections, to put together mixed gift baskets available for purchase.
