HERNDON, Va. (AP) -- Herndon police say a bicyclist was shot by a man whose gun fired as he was loading it.

Police say the adult male bicyclist was shot in the abdomen around 7 p.m. Saturday in a residential community. Police say 49-year-old John Albers was loading his gun inside his home when it discharged, and the bullet struck the cyclist outside.

The cyclist was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Police say Albers did not know the victim. He was charged with willfully discharging a firearm in a public place, resulting in injury.
