Fairfax Co. school board tweaks discipline rules

Saturday - 6/8/2013, 7:16pm  ET

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) -- Fairfax County school officials have voted to change the district's discipline system, allowing for lighter punishments for certain infractions.

The Washington Post reports that school board members voted 9-2 to approve a new handbook on student rights.

One change could result in softer punishments for students caught with a small amount of marijuana at school. Students would have the opportunity to attend a drug and alcohol seminar during a suspension period.

The school board has been engaged in a year-long review of the school system's discipline practices, though some critics said the members didn't go far enough in considering changes.
