WASHINGTON — Apple is unveiling new software for iPhones and iPads, featuring improved functions for multitasking and seamless synchronization with other Mac devices.

At Apple’s 25th annual conference for software developers in San Francisco, the company announced a number of new iOS 8 capabilities.

The software will give Apple mobile devices interactive notification capabilities, so users can reply to a message without leaving another app. iPhones and iPads will also respond to new double tapping gestures, which will retrieve a list of each user’s top contacts.

There will be a universal search tool that covers all files on iPhones and iPads, including Internet content. Devices will also have a “quick type” feature that gives users typing suggestions beyond mere spell-check capabilities.

A “do not disturb” feature will stop conversation notifications with a simple swipe, while a “tap to talk” feature will eliminate typing by recording and sending audio messages.

NBC Washington reports, the new iOS is expected to include a built-in health- management tool to help users track their vital signs, diet and sleeping habits. IOS 8 may also include a digital wallet that enables Apple to process payments on iPhones and iPads.

While speculation has surrounded the reveal of Apple’s home automation system that would enable iPhones and iPads to remotely control lighting, security and other household appliances, this has not been confirmed by the company.

To ensure better coordination between mobile devices and mac devices, Apple’s AirDrop feature will now allow iPhones and Macs to share content to each other directly.

Users will be able to switch devices more easily with the new “handoff” feature that will allow them to write emails or other content on either device. Users will also receive caller ID on Mac devices when a call comes in on their iPhones.

With the software’s improved iMessage feature, users will now have the option to communicate with non-iOS running devices such as Google’s Android system.
