ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- A former candidate for Alexandria's city council and school board has been found not guilty of impersonating a police officer but convicted of brandishing a weapon.

The charges against Scott Gordon stemmed from an altercation with city employees in September that began when he parked in a loading zone.

The Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/mj55sps ) reports that Gordon received a 30-day suspended jail sentence on Monday. He won't serve jail time provided that he completes an anger management class, surrenders his gun and avoids confrontations with law enforcement.

Gordon told the judge that there's more to him than the evidence that was presented in court, citing his involvement in various civic groups and nonprofits.

Gordon, a Republican, dropped his city council bid last year and endorsed a Democratic candidate.
