Alexandria revises tax plan for new Metro station

Sunday - 5/22/2011, 1:15pm  ET

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - Alexandria city officials have removed a neighborhood from a special tax district that would help fund a new Metro station nearby in the Potomac Yard area.

There had been talk of creating a special tax district in the area since 1999. But residents of the Potomac Greens neighborhood argued more than 200 existing homes shouldn't have their tax bills increased.

Instead, a redrawn tax district will only affect future homes and businesses in undeveloped portions of Potomac Yard.

The city may look to fund the Metro station through general tax revenue or transportation funds. The City Council has approved a property tax increase for the 2012 budget and will reserve some funds for transportation.

Officials say the Metro station could be built by 2016 at the earliest.
