N. Kings Highway ramp confuses Telegraph Rd. drivers

Tuesday - 5/17/2011, 9:48am  ET

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Drivers who use the Telegraph Road interchange are encountering some confusion after a new ramp from southbound Telegraph Road to North Kings Highway opened.

You used to pick up North Kings Highway from the left lanes of Telegraph Road. Now, you take a ramp on the right side of Telegraph Road, like you do for Huntington Avenue.

The new traffic pattern is opposite of what you expect. Drivers are getting confused because Huntington Avenue comes up before North Kings Highway, but the new ramp for North Kings Highway is first.

The North Kings Highway ramp is now the first right after crossing the Cameron Run Bridge. Huntington Avenue is the second right.

The ramp opening eliminates that left-hand turn onto North Kings Highway and gives more green light time for drivers on Telegraph Road. The aim is to reduce drive-time commutes.

Traffic is expected to increase along Telegraph Road, the last leg of the Wilson Bridge Project. More than 20,000 workers are being relocated to Fort Belvoir in southern Fairfax County, as part of BRAC, the defense department's Base Realignment and Closure process.

Telegraph Road and Route 1, both of which are exits off the Capital Beltway, are two of the main feeder roads to southern Fairfax County.
