RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Sen. Patsy Ticer, who has served in the state Senate since 1996, plans to retire at the end of her term.

She made the announcement Thursday on the Senate floor.

Ticer is a Democrat who served as mayor of Alexandria before getting elected to the Senate.

Her district includes parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties.

Her retirement sets up a scramble for her seat.

Three Democrats -- Delegate Adam Ebbin, Arlington School Board Chairwoman Libby Garvey and Alexandria Council member Rob Krupika -- appear interested, ARLnow.com reports.

Republican Michael Maibach, an Alexandria businessman, also expressed interest.
