Weekend Wakeup: Back to the grind with light road, rail construction

WASHINGTON — As people return back to normal after the holidays, it’s a light weekend overall for construction projects on the roads and rails, but there are a few delays you need to know about.

METRO

The Orange, Blue, Yellow and Green lines will be running trains every 20 minutes throughout the weekend. Crews will be improving track infrastructure between Pentagon City and Reagan National Airport on the Yellow and Blue lines. Crews will also continue platform repairs at the Minnesota Avenue and Deanwood stations on the Orange line. Also crews will be replacing communication cables between Fort Totten and Prince George’s Plaza on the Green line.

Trains on the Red line will be running every 15 minutes, although between Friendship Heights and Silver Spring, trains will run every 8-10 minutes from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Crews are improving track infrastructure between Friendship Heights and Medical Center.

Metro suggests passengers allow some extra trip, or use their trip planner to get the schedules for both Metrorail and Metrobus.

The infrastructure work is part of Metro’s multi-year effort to repair the system and get it back to a place where GM Richard Sarles says it should’ve been when he took over in 2010.

Maryland

In Montgomery County, the State Highway Administration will close one or two lanes on New Hampshire Avenue at Sligo Creek Parkway in Silver Spring on Saturday and Sunday from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Work is being done on the bridge decks. Drivers can use US Route 1 (Baltimore Avenue) or US Route 29 (Colesville Road) as an alternate.

In Frederick County, SHA will close the right lane on US 15 at Motter Avenue at 10 p.m. on Sunday to remove steel girders on a section of a bridge. Work should be done before the Monday morning rush hour.

In Anne Arundel County, SHA will close the left lane on I-97 south at the Baltimore Beltway and at MD Route 100 in Glen Burnie on Sunday from noon to 5 a.m. Monday.

Virginia

The I-95/395 HOV Lanes will be shut down from the Pentagon to Dumfries on Friday and Saturday overnights for barrier placement, drilled shafts, demolition and hauling away of concrete. This is all part of the I-95 Express Lanes project that should open up in about one year. Drivers should remain in the main lanes.

The ramp from Duke Street (Route 236) East to I-395 South will be closed for sound wall work on Saturday.

The left lane will be closed on the Franconia-Springfield Pkwy. (Route 289) West starting 1000 feet east of I-95 and ending 1000 feet west of I-95 for barrier work on Saturday.

No lane closures are expected for Sunday night.

No work is planned for the Dulles Metrorail/Silver line project.
