Tricks for waking up in the morning

WASHINGTON – The alarm clock doesn’t lie. It’s time to get up.

Few people ever feel they get enough sleep, and strong coffee alone merely treats the symptoms of being tired.

Sleep researchers offer a few tricks to help you wake up feeling fresh, and most of them start before you go to sleep.

Suggestions in “11 Tricks to Waking Up In the Morning” from EverydayHealth.com include the following:

  • Going to sleep at the same time each night;
  • Disconnecting from computers and TV an hour before you plan to go to sleep;
  • Rescheduling your daily schedule to avoid working or exercising too close to bed time.

In the morning, researchers suggest physically moving your alarm clock to the other side of the room to reduce the chance of hitting the snooze button and going back to sleep.

Getting plenty of bright light also will help you wake up.

Long-term solutions to sleep problems include keeping a sleep log, and getting a sleep evaluation to determine if health issues are contributing to your lack of shuteye.
