Giant’s City Market at O store wins design award

The Giant at O Street Market in D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood opened to “oohs and ahhs” last fall, with its historic two-story architecture, wine and beer bar and huge selection of prepared foods. Now it’s been recognized with a national design award.

Progressive Grocer is giving its award for best overall design to the Giant Food at City Market at O.

The 78,000-square-foot Giant anchors the historic O Street Market redevelopment at 7th and O Street, NW. JCA Architects was the project architect for the Giant interior.

“It was critical for us to pay attention to the historic elements of the market in the redesign of the store,” said JCA president John Cooney. “The history helped set the tone for the store’s overall interior and we were able to incorporate historic elements, including the dramatic pitch of the roof, into a design that is crisp, clean and current.”

Giant’s O Street store is the largest grocery store in the District. It replaced a 40,000-square-foot Giant that used to be located at the site.

Store manager George Ross Jr. gave the Washington Business Journal’s Rebecca Cooper a video tour of the store when it opened in November. You can watch it above.
