Metro Richmond Zoo to continue breeding cheetahs

Sunday - 11/10/2013, 3:10pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. - Metro Richmond Zoo owner and director Jim Andelin plans to continue breeding cheetahs following the births of five cubs on his first attempt.

Andelin tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch that he hopes his success wasn't beginner's luck.

The cubs were born Oct. 6. There also are seven adult females and two adult males at the zoo in Chesterfield County.

Andelin says he doesn't plan to sell any cheetahs that the zoo produces. But young cheetahs might be loaned to other breeding programs.

The cubs can be viewed online by the Richmond Cheetah Cam at TimesDispatch.com/cheetah-cam. The Cheetah Cam went live Friday. It's a partnership between the zoo and the newspaper.

Andelin says the Cheetah Cam will run for several months.
