WASHINGTON - Many men who have popped into an upscale restaurant at the last minute -- or who failed to research the restaurant's dress policy -- are all too familiar with the dining room walk-of-shame.
It comes after a hostess tells you a coat is required for dinner and proceeds to pull an unfashionable and oversized jacket out of a musty closet.
But at some of the country's finest restaurants, the days of ratty coats that are two-sizes-too-big are over. The loaner coat closet is getting a makeover.
The New York Times reports that many fine-dining rooms in New York City have upgraded their loaner coat selection to accommodate the growing number of casually-dressed clientele.
Designer coats from Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren have replaced the former jackets, and many restaurant managers are regularly dry cleaning the jackets for their clients. The Four Seasons even keeps children's blazers in stock.
Gentlemen of the dining room, it's time to suit up.
