NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- The Mariner's Museum & Park is hoping to pack the park with pirates.
The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/18Agulv ) the Newport News attraction will attempt to break the Guinness World Records record for "Largest Gathering of Pirates" during its Pirate Festival Sept. 21.
The record is 14,231 pirates that gathered in Hastings, England.
To be recognized as a pirate, participants must wear pirate pants or a wench skirt, a white or striped shirt, pirate hat or bandana and an accessory item. Accessories could include an eye patch, jewelry, compass, telescope, Jolly Roger flag, toy sword, parrot or any other family friendly pirate decoration.
The competition is being held in celebration of Talk Like a Pirate Day. Admission to the festival is free, but it will cost $5 to get into the museum.
