Thursday - 7/18/2013, 7:01pm  ET

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) -- A 73-year-old southwestern Montana man has died while fishing in Yellowstone National Park.

The National Park Service says the man, whose name has not been released, lost his footing while fishing in the Yellowstone River and was swept away in the swift current on Wednesday.

The incident occurred near the Nez Perce picnic ground in the Mud Volcano area of the park.

The Park Service says witnesses reported seeing the man trying to cross the river in chest-deep water. He was carried about 200 yards downstream before another visitor pulled him out and tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

The cause of death is under investigation.

It was the second death reported in Yellowstone this week. A solo hiker was found dead near a mountain summit in the park on Thursday.
