WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Smithsonian's Sackler Gallery says more than 600 people have contributed to a crowd-funding campaign to support the first exhibit about the visual history of yoga.
Museum officials say more than $170,000 has been raised, surpassing the goal of raising $125,000 for the exhibit. The museum says online donations will still be accepted through the summer and fall to support the program.
The exhibit, "Yoga: The Art of Transformation" is scheduled to open in October. It will feature temple structures, devotional icons, manuscripts, early photographs and films about the history of yoga. Curators are pulling together more than 130 objects from collections in the U.S., India and Europe.
Donations for the exhibit will be used to cover the cost of shipping artworks and to present lectures, concerts and workshops.
