Va. woman rescued after bad weather on trail

Friday - 3/8/2013, 10:50am  ET

ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) -- A woman hiking alone on the Appalachian Trail in Tennessee ran into trouble as rain fell and temperatures dropped.

The Johnson City Press (http://bit.ly/VL7tmA) reported rescuers on all-terrain vehicles found 59-year-old Ardenia Gaines of Virginia Beach, Va., on Wednesday and brought her safely out of the Unaka (yew-NAY'-kah) Mountains.

Unicoi County Sheriff's Lt. Jimmy Erwin said Gaines was trying to reach the Cherry Gap shelter before dark on Tuesday, but was slowed by freezing weather. She covered up with a sleeping bag, but awakened Wednesday unable to walk because of numbness. Erwin said Gaines called her family, who called the sheriff's office.

It took more than three hours to reach Gaines and get her into dry clothing and then five hours more get her off the mountain.
