Va. man gets 12 years in near-fatal DC sex assault

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Virginia man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison in what prosecutors say was a sexual assault that was so violent, it nearly killed the victim.

Jose Santos Jr. of Falls Church, Virginia, was sentenced in federal court in the District of Columbia on Tuesday. A jury found him guilty in March of first-degree sexual abuse.

Prosecutors say the 24-year-old Santos met the victim the week of the attack and that the two had gone on two dates before agreeing to meet a third time. During a consensual sexual encounter in the District, prosecutors say Santos grew violent and without the woman’s consent, forcefully sexually assaulted her.

They say the woman had to undergo emergency surgeries and nearly died from blood loss caused by internal trauma.
