Fire that killed 2 in Clarke County investigated

BERRYVILLE, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police say a house fire that killed two people in Clarke County appears to have been accidental.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the fire occurred at a two-story house in Berryville shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday. Authorities recovered the remains of 81-year-old Peggy Ann Jones and 20-year-old Zach W. Jenkins on Sunday morning.

Geller says four other family members in the house escaped the fire.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.

The fire is being investigated by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Culpeper Field Office with assistance from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.
