Arlington residents worried about housing costs

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — A new study finds Arlington County is becoming unaffordable, and a significant number of residents say they may leave because of rising housing costs.

The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/Zx5Mxc ) reports a county-sponsored poll and separate analysis finds that two of every five residents say they are likely to move out of the county in the next five years because of housing costs. Those most at risk are families renting housing with income below $64,500 per year, families with children, seniors and people with disabilities.

The analysis finds Arlington’s home ownership market serves only higher-income households.

The findings are part of a three-year study of affordable housing in Arlington and will be presented Monday at a community discussion. Last year the study found rent increases had significantly outpaced the rise in incomes.
