Appomattox County adopts official song

APPOMATTOX, Va. (AP) — Many localities in Virginia have official seals and flags. Appomattox County might be the only one that also has an official song.

“Twelve Unknown” pays tribute to the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which found and buried 19 Civil War soldiers after the war in a cemetery in the county. Twelve graves are marked as unknown.

The county Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted “Twelve Unknown” as the county’s official song on Monday.

The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/1lTH8dC ) reports that the Virginia Association of Counties is not aware of other official county songs in the state.

The song was written by 68-year-old Gene Williams of Falling River. Williams says he was inspired by an annual ceremony held by the United Daughters of Confederacy at the ceremony to honor the soldiers.
