HILLSVILLE, Va. (AP) -- State investigators are working to determine what sickened more than 50 people at a produce distribution plant in Hillsville.
The Carroll County Sheriff's Office says in a statement that workers at the Virginia Produce Co. plant complained of headaches, dizziness, nausea and difficulty breathing on Tuesday. Most were transported to hospitals in the area. Three were transported by helicopter to Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C., for treatment.
Air quality tests conducted at the plant didn't find any problems.
Investigators with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry were at the plant on Tuesday and returned Wednesday. The department declined to discuss the incident while an investigation is underway.
Virginia Produce owner Moir Beamer tells WDBJ-TV (http://bit.ly/1pJtY7p ) that he believes the problem began in the building's packing area.
