RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Gov. Terry McAuliffe says he did not approve a fundraising appeal his newly formed political action committee sent promising donors personal access to the governor in return for specific donations.

McAuliffe said Thursday that young staffers sent the letter recently on his PAC's behalf without the governor's knowledge. The fundraising letter said that $100,000 donors to the new Common Good Virginia PAC would receive a private dinner with McAuliffe and his wife, as well as monthly meetings with policy experts. Donors of lesser amounts were promised other opportunities to meet McAuliffe.

McAuliffe, who was the former Democratic National Committee chairman and a major fundraiser for former President Bill Clinton, said he did not like tying set donation amounts to types of access and won't be abiding by the PAC's letter.
