Judge dismisses Culpeper deputy's firing suit

Sunday - 2/16/2014, 2:42pm  ET

CULPEPER, Va. (AP) -- A judge has dismissed a lawsuit that claimed a Culpeper County deputy was fired for reporting another deputy's assault of an inmate.

Matthew Scott Manuel filed the $300,000 lawsuit in October 2013 against former Sheriff Jim Branch and former jailer Donald Brooks.

The Star-Exponent reports that attorneys for both sides agreed to dismiss the case. Culpeper County Circuit Court Judge Susan L. Whitlock entered the dismissal order last week.

Manuel was one of five deputies fired in 2011 following allegations that former Deputy Alma Julia Brown slapped a restrained female inmate at the Culpeper County Jail after the inmate repeatedly spit on the officers.

Current Sheriff Scott Jenkins rehired Manuel and the other deputies, except for Brown, in 2012. Brown was convicted of assault in November 2011.
