RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The Virginia Education Association is celebrating its 150th anniversary.
The organization was founded by 50 educators on Dec. 29, 1863, in Petersburg. Since then, its membership has grown to more than 50,000 teachers and education support personnel.
The organization says it plans to publish a book detailing its history in 2014.
Events held earlier this year to celebrate the anniversary included an open house at the Richmond headquarters and a statewide radio campaign on behalf of public schools.
