POWHATAN, Va. (AP) -- William E. Maxey Jr., the longest-serving circuit court clerk in Virginia history, has died. He was 92.

Bennett and Barden Funeral Home's website says Maxey died on Dec. 22 at his home in Powhatan.

Maxey served as Powhatan County Circuit Court clerk for 56 years before he retired on Sept. 30.

Maxey was appointed clerk on July 1, 1957, to complete an unexpired term. His most recent re-election was in 2007.

His son, William Maxey III of Powhatan, tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/KbZ7RC ) that his father's work was his life. He says his father never took a vacation and was in his office seven days a week.

A visitation is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Christian Life Center of Powhatan United Methodist Church in Powhatan.
