Va. farm markets stretching hours to the holidays

Saturday - 11/30/2013, 9:24am  ET

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) -- Farm markets are not just a spring, summer and fall thing in Virginia.

The Farm Bureau says more farm markets are extending their hours through the holiday season. Of the more than 200 farm markets in the state, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says 28 remain open through the end of the holiday season.

One of those is the Harrisonburg Farmers Market. Manager Josie Showalter says vendors have a variety of food products, prepared foods and Christmas items for sale.

Items typically found at farmers markets through November and December range from wines, cider, homemade jams and jellies to maple syrup and apple butter and seafood.

At the Harrisonburg market, vendor Debbie Fischer offers bowls and cooking utensils hand-carved out of wood by her husband, Steve.
