COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (AP) -- One of the largest and earliest planned suburbs in Colonial Heights has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Park Service has listed the Chesterfield Highlands Historic District on the register, the nation's official list of important historic places.

Chesterfield Highlands began to take shape in the early 20th century after the introduction of the Richmond-Petersburg Interurban Railway. It resulted in the rapid transformation from farmland to a suburb along the Appomattox River's north banks.

Most of the early homes in Chesterfield Highlands were influenced by the Craftsman movement. In the decade after World War II, the district continued to grow with modest houses inspired by popular post-war styles.
