NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- A former store manager in Gloucester County who admitted selling illegal bath salts has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison.
Thirty-five-year-old Jose Nicholas Alvarado of Gloucester was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Newport News.
Federal prosecutors say Alvarado was employed for nine months last year as manager of a store called A Lil of This N That, where a large amount of synthetic drugs were recovered. Alvarado admitted making money on sales of the synthetic drugs and said they were intended for human consumption.
Bath salts are crystalized chemicals that are snorted, swallowed or smoked. They can cause psychotic episodes, seizures and hallucination.
