Climate change threatens Va. naval base

Saturday - 11/2/2013, 10:46am  ET

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- A three-year study concludes that vital infrastructure at the world's largest naval base in Norfolk would not survive the impact of climate change by the second half of this century.

The study of Naval Station Norfolk was conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers. The study concluded that powerful storms and flooding from seawaters would wreak havoc at the sprawling base.

The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1atqfGx) reports that the study drives home the steep challenges the Navy faces amid continuing budget crises and government shutdowns.

The study also identified weak points that can help the Navy plan as it replaces aging equipment and infrastructure.
