MECHANICSVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Six chimpanzees at a private zoo in Virginia have been transferred to the Houston Zoo following the owner's unsuccessful attempt to obtain county permits for four of them.
Houston Zoo primates and carnivores curator Beth Schaefer tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1gc5yB8 ) that the chimps arrived Tuesday and appear to be adapting to their new home.
Curtis W. Shepperson had kept the chimps at his Windy Oaks Animal Farm in Mechanicsville. He had permits from Hanover County for two chimps but not for the others. The county discovered the four illegal chimps following several escapes.
The Hanover County Board of Supervisors rejected Shepperson's request for permits for the four chimps in May. He later agreed to transfer all six to the Houston Zoo.
